[Smac-users] Help with s-mac paper

i am studing the s-mac paper for my post-graduate project and i have a question about some results of the experiments. At the first graph, as the interval is increased, the energy consumption at the source nodes is getting bigger ( especially with 80211 protocol). I really can not understand why what happens. I thought that if the interval is increased and the traffic is getting more light, the energy consuption should be decerased, because less packets are send, and there is more idle time ( that spends less energy than the other modes).  
 
I would really appreciate your help ( some explenation would be perfect) with my problem.
