Let's get together and have a meeting to discuss the optical correlator project. John and I will be attending from USC. We are available on: (in order of preference) Tuesday morning, Monday after 1pm, and Thursday before 4pm. Let me know if any of these times are good for you (the ISI folks) so we can settle on a meeting time. Also, we can either meet here or at ISI, it's up to you. We would like this to be a working meeting in which we finalize what we want to present in the short (3 page) paper that we would like to submit to the Optical Fiber Communications conference (OFC), for which the deadline is October 10th. Since we only have a month left, my hope is that after the meeting it is clear what each of us needs to do to get this paper done on time (what data do we want to present and so forth). After the conference we will submit a paper to Photonics Technology Letters in which we can include any extra data that didn't make it into conference submission. As you know, John and I have been constructing the experimental setup to demonstrate an optical correlator that can be dynamically configured to "match" any x of 8 bits. The actual implementation would require an x of 24 bits correlator, so the 8 bit one is just to demonstrate that it works. The idea is to perform a hash on a routing table that would allow the optical hardware to determine which output port of an IP router that an incoming packet should be routed to. The theory is that this can be done by looking at only a subset of the 24 bits in the IP header since most internet routers only have 2 to 4 ports to choose from. ISI's part of the research (as I understand it) is to use some actual routing tables to determine how successful this might be. For instance, how often would examining just a few of the header bits succeed in making a routing decision? Clearly, for cases in which the correlator fails to make a "match," the packet will have to be electronically detected and processed in more detail. I then made an effort to reword it for the OFC audience. I then tried to finish up the paper as much as I could (aside from the further details in the Algorithm section) so that we have a full rough draft to work with. Now we need to start throwing stuff onto the editing floor because it is way too long (as always for my first drafts). My favorite way of doing this is to usually go through it and carefully find ways to still include all the information, but in more dense, concise sentences that still sound good. This sort of art takes a few tries though. Anyhow, what became apparent is that with this audience we really need to emphasize the optics and I can't skip too many details in the experimental section because they are going to be very interested in how the device was made and how the correlators are configured to match a given input pattern. However, the paper is worthless without giving a good explanation of the what the heck an optical bypass is and why it would be useful and feasible to have one. This of course requires the explanation of the algorithm that determines the best configuration of the correlators. That is why the intro and concept is still long. This will be hard to cut down to leave room for the details of the latter sections of the paper, but we'll figure it out. Anyhow, have at it! Comments and new versions are welcome! We've finished fabricating and characterizing them. We will be putting some bit patterns into them this evening to see them produce autocorrelation outputs. Our plan is to configure them for a few different cases and show that when the input pattern matches the pattern that is correlator is tuned to, then the decision circuit outputs a high level that can successfully control a two port switch. I spoke with Joe Touch over the phone and we discussed what sort of data might be best to take. We will configure the correlators for a few arbitrarily chosen bit patterns (probably some 3 of 8 and 4 of 8 cases) to show the successful correlation and switching. This will be the final figure in the paper. Additionally, we will investigate some of the technical "engineering" issues with regards to the limits of these correlators. For instance, if you are looking for a 5 of 8 pattern with 5 "1" bits, will you run out of optical power in the 1s correlator which has to successively reflect the "1" bits off of 5 mirrors. And is the 0s correlator more tolerant to a pattern with several 0 bits than the 1s correlator is for a pattern with several 1 bits. We plan to complete the experiment by the end of Monday. We will then focus on refining the paper. The deadline is 9am, October 10, a week from Wednesday. Michelle
