My concept of a group is essentially a city, and the MAC protocol is intended to be non-persistent CSMA.
With the groups as cities, any node in the city can hear any transmissions from any other node in the city. At the edges of the city, the nodes there can reach the neighboring city.
NYC Syracuse Rochester Buffalo E------>
a b c d e f g h j k m n
In the above diagram, if "b" were to transmit, nodes "a" and "c" could hear him. In addition, node d would hear him. If node c were to transmit, nodes "a" through "f" would hear him. However, due to the longer distance, node "b" and node "h" could both be talking and not interfere with each other.
I mention 802.11 only because the list archives pointed out that it could be used to perform CSMA.
