[ns] How to calculate maximum channel utilization

Dear all,
   
  Is there a way to calculate the channel utilization from ns-2 trace file? that is which is better to let each node measure the channel utilization based on Is_idle() function at mac and record the value for each node or count the number of transmissions/receiving/forwarding of data packets from the trace file within a specific time duration and find the channel utilization (or busy time fraction)? which option you think it is better?
