[ns] help please! HOW ASSERT function works what is its aim in 802.15.4 implementation.

Hi!
I will be very thankful if you can just tell me what is assert(); doing in
the implementation of 802.15.4
I cannot understand what is actually trying to implement. Is it a access
lock so that mutual exclusiveness of variables can be maintained.
