[ns] how to assign level number?

Hye all,
   
  I would like to know how to assign a level number for nodes in hierarchical structure?
   
  For example, root node assign itself a level 0 and broadcast a packet. When the neighbours receive this packet, they assign themselves level 1.
   
   Can you help me.
