[ns] NS2.27: Turning nodes on and off

Hello,
 
Im simulating a wireless traffic scenario on NS 2.27. I am working on a inter vehicular communication , and need to turn the nodes on and off, to simulate vehicles entering and leaving a road. I read up all the posts on in the ns-users archive and tried everything that has been suggested. I tried 
$ns at <time> "$node off"
I commented out the tcl.evalf in the common/mobilenode.cc 
However, I see that the trace file shows packets being sent and received even after the node being turned off. 
Can someone tell me why this happens, and what should be done to stop the transmissions between particular nodes dynamically.
