This question is definitely depending on which version you use.

In ns2.26 and I suppose also in ns2.27 (I don't know the new version in 
detail) the following lines work:
Mac/802_11 set basicRate_ 1Mb
Mac/802_11 set dataRate_  11Mb

This new mechanism substitutes the former used variables bandwidth at 
PHY and MAC-layer.
These old variables were used in older versions of ns2. I'm not sure in 
which version the new mechanism was introduced.
However, an always working answer to the bandwidth/datarate question is 
not possible, but for more exact descriptions you should check the 
mailinglist archives. I'm sure that there was a similar discussion some 
months ago. There are numerous questions like yours so that it will take 
a bit of time to check all these postings, but there are definitely some 
answers, too.
