As pointed out by another ns-user, a real radio cannot switch from tx to rx mode (or vice-versa) instantly. It takes a finite time. SIFS is designed to give that much time to the radio. The DIFS (and PIFS, although no one seems to use it) is also larger than SIFS to ensure that the current (receiving) node can retain the channel.
