[ns] Timestamp values when using UDP agents

Does anyone know why, when a UDP agent is used, the timestamp value in the common header is multiplied by 8000 and then truncated to an integer value?
If I attempt to use the timestamp value to compute packet delay (I do this in a C++ function) then, as a result of the rounding, I can be off by as much as
125 microseconds (i.e., 1/8000 sec).

Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
