The Asolo Award come into being at the dawn of the third millennium and =
inspired by the figure of Gian Francesco Malipiero. It seemed =
particularly appropriate to us to promote an initiative aimed at new =
musical talent in the very environment which was so dear to Malipiero =
and which provided him with the inner peace that kindled his passion for =
composing.

Gian Francesco Malipiero was endowed with an extraordinary intellectual =
curiosity and an irrepressible desire to investigate every new form of =
musical expression.
He was always close to young composers, as demonstrated by the genuine =
esteem he held towards Bruno Maderna, first his pupil and then a =
companion of many passions, perhaps the most important of which was =
their rediscovery of the vast treasure of past Venetian music.=20
It must have been moving to have witnessed the old Maestro's care and =
respect towards a young pupil even though the pupil's creativity often =
developed along paths very different from his own.

Probably Gian Francesco Malipiero would have enjoyed leafing through the =
orchestral scores sent from all over the world for the Asolo Award, =
particularly as their destination used to be his home and where =
Euromusica - entrusted with this vast historical and musical heritage - =
is committed to reviving the workshop spirit, passion for research and =
curiosity for the new that marked the lifestyle of the great Maestro.

EUROMUSICA - European Center for Music and Musical Theater - announces =
"Asolo Award", an International Competition of Musical Composition for a =
Symphony Orchestra and a String Orchestra.
The competition, dedicated to composer Gian Francesco Malipiero (Venice =
1882 - Treviso 1973) who took up his residence in Asolo, will take place =
according to regulations set forth in this announcement:

Art. 1
The competition, open to composers of any nationality and without age =
restrictions, is comprised of two sections:
Section A - for compositions to be performed by a symphony orchestra, =
with prizes to be awarded as follows:
- 1st prize of 8.000.000 Italian Lire (or 4.131,65 Euros)
- 2nd prize of 4.000.000 Italian Lire (or 2.065,83 Euros)
Section B - for compositions to be performed by a string orchestra, =
with prizes to be awarded as follows:
- 1st prize of 6.000.000 Italian Lire (or 3.098,74 Euros)
- 2nd prize of 3.000.000 Italian Lire (or 1.549,37 Euros)
Amounts of prizes are gross: tax must be deducted.
Only compositions that have never been published, performed or awarded =
any prize may be entered for the competition. The length of each =
composition must not be less than 15 minutes or longer than 25 minutes =
for Section A and not less than 10 minutes or longer than 20 minutes for =
Section B.
Compositions must be for:
a symphony orchestra (Section A) consisting of the following =
instruments:
10 violins I 8 violins II 6 violas 4 =
cellos 4 double basses
2 flutes 2 oboes 2 clarinet 2 bassoons =
4 horns
2 trumpets 3 trombones 1 kettledrum 1 =
percussion 1 cymbal 1 marimba

a string orchestra (Section B) consisting of the following instruments:
7 violins I 6 violins II 5 violas =
4 cellos 2 double basses

Art. 2
Composers may take part in one section only (participation in both =
sections is not allowed).

Art. 3
Competition entries must be presented as follows:
Each entrant must send three separate sealed envelopes:
I. The first sealed envelope, bearing the letter A and a relevant =
motto chosen by the competitor to identify oneself anonymously, must =
contain only the original full score accompanied by 2 copies
=20
II. The second sealed envelope, bearing the letter B and =
the above motto must contain the following documents and information:
=B7 first and last names, address, telephone number, date and =
place of birth, nationality of the entrant;
=B7 a declaration by the composer that the composition has never =
been published, performed or awarded any prize;
=B7 a declaration by the composer, under his/her own =
responsibility, that he/she has complied with and accepted all =
regulations of the competition, in particular Arts 7 and 8 of this =
present announcement;
=B7 a relevant (artistic) curriculum and details of studies =
followed (these latter where applicable;
=B7 a copy of the receipt for payment of 80.000 Italian Lire (or =
41,31 Euros) into EuroMusica's account, number 10240315, made by postal =
order to EuroMusica Foresto Vecchio 8, 31011 Asolo (TV) Italy, for =
administrative costs, not refundable.
=B7 the composer's choice as to which section he/she intends to =
participate in.
III. The third sealed envelope, bearing the letter C and =
containing envelopes A and B, must be sent to:=20
EUROMUSICA "Asolo Award" Competition - Foresto Vecchio, 8 - 31011 Asolo =
(TV) Italy.
Envelopes A, B and C must not bear any identification whatsoever that =
might disclose the entrant's identity. Envelope C therefore, must not =
bear the sender's address.

Art. 4
Entries, as under Art. 3, must be mailed to the above address within and =
not beyond 30 December 2000, proof of such date being the postmark on =
the parcel.=20
Entries mailed after such a date will not be accepted. EuroMusica does =
not bear any responsibility for entries which fail to arrive or which =
are mailed after the closing date (30 December 2000).

Art. 5
The results of the competition will be announced within 30 March 2001.
Winners will be advised of the result of the competition by registered =
letter.
=20
Art. 6
An international committee, set up for the occasion by EuroMusica, and =
comprising five members, chaired by an internationally recognized =
composer, will:
=B7 examine the scores entered in accordance with the provisions =
and terms under articles 3 and 4 of this present announcement.
=B7 assign the prizes as under Art.1, its decision being final =
and unquestionable.
=B7 award no prizes or any part of them, should entries not be =
of such quality as to satisfy the objectives set by the competition.

Art. 7
EuroMusica may decide to organize performances of the scores awarded 1st =
and 2nd prizes in Sections A, within two years of the announcement of =
the results of the competition. Performances may be open to the public =
and EuroMusica reserves the right to carry out the recording of such =
performances for disc, radio and/or television, using any chosen =
technical media, and to use it for prospective broadcasting as well as =
any other purposes it considers suitable, with no obligation ensuing for =
EuroMusica to pay composers any recompense. EuroMusica may decide to =
organize performances of the scores awarded 1st and 2nd prizes in =
Section B, within two years of the announcement of the results of the =
competition under the same terms as in Section A.

Art. 8
Winners must see to the editing of the musical material necessary for =
the performances of the scores for a symphony orchestra and a string =
orchestra and must provide EuroMusica with it. EuroMusica reserves the =
right to use such material for all purposes it considers suitable.

Art. 9
The original scores may be returned on explicit request at the entrant's =
own cost by 30/09/2001, provided that they comply with the Articles of =
this present announcement. However two copies will be retained in the =
score archives of EuroMusica at Asolo (TV).

Art. 10
Participation in the competition:
=B7 implies the full and integral acceptance of these present =
regulations. Failure to observe any one rule of these regulations will =
result in the immediate exclusion of the entrant from participation in =
the competition;
=B7 grants EuroMusica the right to use the scores to which prizes =
have been assigned as under Art. 1, without any restrictions of time or =
form, directly or through third parties; for every use, the composers =
will receive their copyright fees;
=B7 grants EuroMusica and a publishing house on its behalf, =
publishing rights of the winning scores, provided that they are not tied =
to exclusive rights with other publishing houses. For these purposes, =
the entry must contain a declaration of availability of publishing =
rights. Should there be any publishing rights, the entrant must present =
a letter of formal commitment from his/her publisher agreeing to grant =
EuroMusica or a publishing house on its behalf rights to co-publishing =
in all related and resulting aspects and forms;
=B7 forbids the winning composers from using the scores in any =
form whatsoever up until the radio and/or television transmission has =
taken place.
=B7 grants the composers who have not won, release from =
obligation not to perform their entered works, beginning from the day =
immediately after the announcement of the winners.

Art. 11
Should any cause, not attributable to EuroMusica, hinder fully or in =
part the running of the competition according to the regulations and =
within the set time limits, EuroMusica reserves the right to make =
suitable provision, giving due announcement to both participants and =
public.

Art. 12
Should any controversy arise, recourse will be made to the Court of =
Treviso as the competent legal authority. For any issue regarding the =
interpretation or application of this present announcement, Italian law =
will apply.

Art. 13
The competition is not open to employees or members of EuroMusica.
