Since you're inside ISI, you probably haven't noticed that all links to the scripts are of the form: file:/nfs/jade/blah i.e. not accessible outside ISI. I'd suggest using this to build an index to the contents of: http://www.isi.edu/cgi-bin/nsnam/cvsweb/ns-2/tcl/ex where all the example scripts in the distribution can be described in detail. hey presto, the newbie doing a search will find that she has already downloaded the script that contains the solution to her problem, but didn't know it. > Link to NS script inventory page: > http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/script_inv/index.html just call it http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/scripts/ far easier to type and remember. The basic intention for this script database is for educational purpose; to help people use ns to demonstrate networking issues in classrooms etc. Hence the format for uploading file which includes namoutputs, screen shots... But I guess we could have a different interface that would allow search thru the above database, tcl/ex and any other sources for ns scripts. --Padma. So with time and growing number of contributions, we'd be able to create a pool of ns scripts alongwith their nam-demos (one of our future plans is to run nam from the web browser), screen-shots etc, which could be used to demonstrate interesting features of a particular protocol, or to stress any other networking issues, primarily in classrooms. so we'd like to encourage people who already use ns for teaching (as well as those who don't but would like to), to use this database for downloading different scripts as well as for contributing their own scripts. When we have more experience with this way of organizing scripts we will consider expanding it to store general ns scripts. Thanks, --Padma. This release is version 1.0a11-prerelease. Nam version (1.0a11) will be included in the next all-in-one release of ns and nam. This prerelease contains the following: * A more feature complete nam editor, which allows the graphical creation of ns scripts, network topologies and mobile node movement. - To create a new editor file select New Editor... from the File menu in the Nam Console window. * Several bug fixes in the display of wireless animations. The goals of the nam editor are to enable new users to create and manipulate ns scripts without any knowledge of tcl programming and to have a tool that can be used in lab experiments to further students understanding of networking principles and concepts. For more information about using nam and ns for educational purposes, please see the web page http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/ns/edu/index.html and consider joining the ns-edu mailing list. Source code and precompiled binaries can be downloaded from http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/nam/. Please send all comments and bug reports to ns-users@isi.edu. I used ns for essentially three assignments: i) ARQ protocols (link layer) ii) Distance-vector routing iii) experimenting with TCP variants plus a fourth introductory assignment for getting used to the simulator. My objective was to avoid having students write any code that required recompilation. This was because i) the administrator of the departmental machines agreed to install ns and all of its dependencies in a file share that could be mounted on all the rest of the machines (and hence, students wouldn't have privileges to recompile), and ii) I didn't want to take students down the path of having to understanding the split object model. Therefore, I decided to base all of the protocol work on OTcl-based agents using the Agent/Message class (it was the closest analog to what I had in mind). Plusses of ns ----------- - nam received positive feedback-- the animations were helpful in visualizing the operation of the protocols - students rated the TCP assignment the most interesting, because it made liberal use of xgraph and understanding the impact of different TCP loss algorithms graphically (Tahoe vs. Reno vs. NewReno) Minuses of ns ----------- - Students struggled with Tcl syntax, especially undergraduate EE students. For example, the list manipulation commands (lreplace, lindex) proved vexing for some. - It was probably more difficult than it should have been for me to write protocols that did not involve changing any C++ code. In the end, I decided to base both the ARQ and routing protocols on the Agent/Message class. This was kind of clumsy but it allowed me to overlay my protocols on a statically configured network. This type of solution has limitations (e.g., making sure that messages don't exceed 64 characters because of the base class definition, treating PDUs as character based strings rather than binary, interworking with other pieces of ns), but can be used satisfactorily if the goals of the assignment are modest. Thoughts on if I were to do it again ------------ A straightforward message-passing protocol framework, for educational use, would be helpful. For protocols at IP layer or above, something akin to a raw sockets interface would be useful. Because of the abstraction in the ns simple links, it is difficult to experiment with link layer protocols. My scripts are available at http://www.tomh.org/class/ if anyone is interested. I´ll try google again, maybe my choice for words for the query was wrong. I´ll sure post here as soon as our project is done. It´s basicly an Applet interface to design the network, then the topology information is sent to the webserver through normal HTML POST method. On the server, php scripts treat the information and a TCL script generates the TCL script to be used by ns. After that the user is sent to a page where he/she can analyse the results and download the tcl script and the nam and ns trace files. Also, professor Salvador, I´m interested about your researches. NAM has editing capabilities that allows you to graphically create topologies and run them directly from the editor. To use it, run nam and choose "New nam editor" from the file menu. Lastly, we would be very interested to learn how you are using/plan to use ns/nam in education. Hope this helps, Christos. ------------ sabrina@inf.ufsc.br writes: > Hi, > > Thank you all for your answers. > > Just to be clear, I´m not looking for ns documentation or tutorials. We are two or three lectures (the spanish word 'profesor' can be misunderstood in english) working with NS-2. We started half year ago, more or less. A colleague of mine and myself are working about routing protocols in wireless networks. Just understanding them and simulating some scenarios. Another colleague is designing a multicast protocol (with wired networks). Finally, we have an optional subject in Telecommunications Engineering called "network simulations" which we use NS-2 with. Pupils start with the program and they build some simple simulations. We are far from being experts, of course. I hope it helps Regards, Salvador Luna. ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Friday, March 28, 2003 9:47 PM Subject: Enc: Re: [Ns-edu] More information... Hi, Thank you all for your answers. Just to be clear, I´m not looking for ns documentation or tutorials. We have already been working with ns-2 for almost 2 years and we have a big ns-expert here in our project (after a long long time of headaches and difficulties :) I´m writing a paper about this graphical interface I developed for ns, so I was looking for other papers or studies on the same subject, so that I could compare and analyse them. Thanks S Puangpronpitag, you offered me a a lot of good examples. I already looked up the ns website for more info, but found none. I´ll try google again, maybe my choice for words for the query was wrong. I´ll sure post here as soon as our project is done. I wanted to post some comments about some of the animations in the current ns-edu animation database. These comments are based on my notes about which animations I used last year in class (a graduate level networking class). My goal is to highlight a few of the animations that I know work well, and how they fit in. If other folks have comments about animations THEY used, please let us know. -John Some comments: - all of the animations can be gotten from http://www.isi.edu/cgi-bin/ns-edu/view_db.pl - you can also browse through http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/repository/topics.html for a topical list (you have to be a little careful, though. Some of the animations have suffered bit rot and don't show what they claim. We need to do some pruning.) - you should download a current nam for best results. There should be a windows binary on the nam web page. - all of the scripts produce lots of warnings, even when run with the current nam. This is a bug we should fix, but haven't done so yet. :-( - You can link them in to powerpoint if you want; for details see http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/ns/edu/powerpoint.html (I just show them on a linux laptop.) - finally, I hope to have a couple of wireless animations in a week or two. I'll post to ns-edu again when they're up. NoSlowStart.nam: shows the concept of dumping a large window into a bandwidth limited link, and that causing loss. No annotations at all, so you need to spell out what the point is for sudents. Good to contrast with SlowStart.nam (next). I didn't show this one last year, but in an undergrad class it might be nice, and could be presented quickly. SlowStart.nam Same setup as NoSlowStart.nam, but shows opening the window slowly, and shows getting to a reasonable operating point (with packets spaced and such better. Has annotations that try to tell the story, but there are probably too many details for it to be used alone... it has a some retransmits and such, so not a clean story. I didn't show this one last year, but in an undergrad class it might be nice, and could be presented quickly, if coupled with NoSlowStart. Otherwise 1_A4-slow-start is better (but less flashy). 1_A4-slow-start.nam Very simple concept, but it has a good animation of slow-start. (exponential increase in pkts/round.) Very good for an undergrad class. Mabye to simple for a grad class, except that showing time/sequence plots is IMHO important and this might be a good vehicle for that. Also good to show correlation between packets in flight and TCP time/event graphs. Pop it up in nam, then do "Analaysis > Active sessions" and click on the button "TCP session between node 0.0 and node 1.0" to bring up the namgraph. By comparions ot SlowStart.nam, this one tells a much, much simpler story, and has a nam graph. fast-retransmit-out.nam Reasonable job of showing fast retransmit. Again, good to show with packets and namgraph. Good for a grad class. Mabye too much TCP detail for an undergrad class or maybe not, depending on how much TCP you do. fast-recovery-out.nam A more complex concept. Probably too much for an undergrad class. I go over it in my grad class some, but fast recovery is getting pretty detailed wrt TCP algorithms. As an animation, it does a reasonable job, although no annotations (text in at the bottom of nam window). But the dupack_ count and cwnd_ and such is all in the monitor. Each node in the network is randomly assigned a weight and higher weighted nodes are assigned cluster heads. I was wondering of ways by which each node advertises its weight to its neighbors. Can someone please tell me (1) how the nodes will store its weights in its packets to be sent to neighbors and (2) how and where a node on receiving a packet store its neighbors weight. Thank you. Dear Sirs,

I installed ns-2.27 in cygwin environment successfully. But for my thesis I need to compare a secured

Ad Hoc routing protocol with unsecured one. Please answer to my dollowing questions:

1- Is ns-2.27 proper for Ad Hoc simulation? ( I see that CMU and other extensions run in previous version)

2-Is CMU or any other extension necessary for my purpose? (please name the other necessary extensions)

3- can I  install CMU extension on ns-2.27?

4- How can I use aodv.cc or dsr.cc files in my .tcl projects?

Please let me know what is needed to start with Ad Hoc in NS-2.

Best Regards

Hojjat Habibpour

EXAMS is a visualization tool for wireless NS-2 simulations. EXAMS is an open source project available online at: http://www.livathinos.gr/EXAMS_overview.aspx EXAMS’ goal is to help the researcher understand the mobile routing protocol with an exact visual representation of the NS-2 simulation outcome, while at the same time enabling him to control the animation process. It can visualize network layout, animate mobile nodes’ movements, playback packets exchange at routing and agent level, give user the ability to freely move forward and backwards in simulation time and depict the network partitions according to given radio range. As regards data transmissions EXAMS can portray source and destination address, network level (routing or agent), direction, flow sequence and other. Moreover EXAMS keeps detailed statistics about data being sent, received, forwarded or dropped on a node and network basis EXAMS has been designed with the protocol developer in mind and provides a complete environment to study, test and debug wireless network protocols. Its unique characteristic is its extensible architecture which makes it possible to visualize network protocol’s internal data structures like routing tables, values for protocol’s state variables, protocol specific packet types - in fact anything inside the trace file. Technically this is achievable through protocol extensions which are developed by the protocol designer himself and are responsible to visualize protocol’s data according to its own semantics. Additionally the visual environment of EXAMS incorporates many user friendly features like: - Fast jump to a specific line of the trace file. - Zoom in/out capability. - Filtering of network traffic according to routing and/or agent layer. - Screenshots capture to external image file. - Color and shape codes for data transmission. - Extensive usage of keyboard shortcuts.
