You should download the software, examine it, and try to run it and 
modify it to do useful things.  Working through the tutorial should 
help.  To get an idea of the types of projects that are being discussed, 
please review the ns-developers list messages (that have the keyword 
"GSOC" in the subject line):

and have a look at the wiki pages.  Some students have already posted 
project proposals to the list so you can see the nature of some of the 
applications that will be considered.
