Joe,
Thanks for posting this overview and for encouraging class projects based on extending ns-3.
Now that we are starting to see new users of ns-3, the project needs to decide upon a mailing list for ns-3 users. There are two obvious options: i) reuse existing ns-users mailing list, and ii) create a new ns-3-users list.
There are some tradeoffs. By reusing existing ns-users list, readers of that list would view both ns-2 and ns-3 related questions. One possible advantage of this are that ns-2 users would start to see the use cases emerging for ns-3, and vice versa-- these user communities would learn more about one another and the respective tools. The downside is that the overall traffic on that list would go up (it is already quite busy), and in general, people focusing on one particular tool might view the other traffic as noise. I can also envision potential confusion on a shared list, regarding whether a given post was related to ns-2 or ns-3.
If we have separate lists, we could consider to take some steps to help the two user communities to be aware of one another, by perhaps cross-posting monthly summaries of what topics were being discussed on each list. Someone would have to put together this summary each month.
What would people like to see for ns-3 users?
Tom
