I was the one that mentioned patches, but I was referring to
source patches, not binary.
My suggestion was based on my experience with ns2 for network
protocol research, which was mostly spent modifying the source
to analyze new protocols. Because of the effort involved in
porting these protocols to new ns2 releases, most of the folks
I knew stuck with a single version for their graduate career.
For these folks, I think source patches for bugs would be very
helpful (it would be for me, at least), and should be easy to
generate against a "frozen" distribution. OTOH, I don't know
if folks like me are among the majority ns2 user base.
