Could the person that is most bothered care to explain with more clarity what
he wants to see implemented?  I must say I that I am confused after reading
this bug report and could use a concise and clear summary of what we want to
accomplish.

In parallel I am trying now to give a go at a 'download.py' script for the
build system refactoring.  I probably won't finish build system refactoring in
time for 3.3, but at least it's a start.
