If you are only using multicast routing as a infrastructure mechanism, and the protocol you use is one of dense mode, or centralized multicast routing, then these changes need not affect you. More particularly, these changes can simplify your coding, and also provide improved features that you would use. However, if you are looking at multicast routing, or are using PIM as your multicast routing protocol, then these changes could affect you adversely. To understand the nature of the impact, we would like to hear from you as to exactly what your multicast routing work is, or how and why you are using PIM, and to better understand your needs and concerns. These changes are scheduled to occur before the next release, currently impending. Subsequently, we are also considering the implementation of a sparse mode multicast routing protocol as well. Some of the issues we expect to address are: - redesign of the network interfaces code. This would make it easier to compose complex links etc. without requiring knowledge of the internal structure of links and nodes. Thus, this eliminates the need for kludges such as: if link head is DuplexNetworkInterface ; then do something else do something else fi - provide increased tracing support in multicast - devolve support for the MultiLink and MultiLinkofInterfaces forms of LANs. However, we plan to add support to the LAN models done by the Daedalus group at Berkeley. - eliminate the flag variable, Simulator::NumberInterfaces_. Users no longer need worry or specify this variable. This setting will be quietly ignored, even if the user sets it. - Similarly, the flag variable, Simulator::EnableMcast_ is to be phased out, in favour of a method based invocation of the same. The premise is that, in an OO environment, methods good, flags bad. - we expect to work on the dense mode, and centralized multicast code, and over a brief span of time, provide a simple sparse mode implementation of multicast. At least the first two items will be completed before the impending release. In particular, we do not plan to upgrade the PIM implementation in ns at this time. For those people working on internal multicast routing, there may be additional impact. This also impacts those who are using the PIM implementation in ns at the present time: - cleanup some of the internal multicast code, to make it easier to experiment with multicast routing protocols. in particular, we plan to restructure the internals to conform to the idioms of the appropriate programming language. Since most of multicast is in OTcl, this means that the OTcl code will change. One common example of change is code such as: instproc { argslist } { ... } will change to instproc { args } { ... } In this case, the args form of input arguments to a procedure call is a Tcl idiom, and hence is *more natural* to OTcl; however, it means that functions that call this method should no longer wrap their arguments into a single list. In particular, this will cause OTcl to pass the arguments as a doubly nested list, and likely confuse such methods. This also involves other changes to the internal calling APIs that could affect the way the base classes interact with your routing protocol. We will attempt to document all the details as we accomplish these changes. These will appear on the changes web pages, at http://www-mash.cs.berkeley.edu/ns/mcast.html periodically. This entire message is also available at the same address, http://www-mash.cs.berkeley.edu/ns/mcast.html. This release of ns also comes with new releases of nam (v1.0a11), otcl(v1.0a8), tclcl(v1.0b12) and the ns-allinone(v2.1b9) package. The ns/nam release has many new features/modules as well as several bug-fixes which are listed in brief below. The new release is available from the ns website at http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/dist/ and by FTP from ftp://ftp.isi.edu/nsnam/. The ns-build page at http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/ns/ns-build.html contains instructions for downloading and installing ns and will be updated tonight to reflect the new version. Please send your comments and bug-reports to ns-users@isi.edu ------------------------------------------------------------------------ What's new in ns-2.1b9 -------------------------- New Modules: ------------- * Directed Diffusion (developed by SCADDS, USC/ISI) has been integrated into ns. Note that the C++ Standard Template Library is used extensively, so directed diffusion will not run on systems lacking support for templates or the STL. * Pragmatic General Multicast (PGM) code contributed by Ryan Barnett implements a large subset of the PGM specification. * PI controller, Vq, REM, and Gibbens/Kelly (GK) active queue management have been added to ns. (Contributed by Jitendra Padhye, Srisankar Kunniyu, Sanjeewa Athuraliya, Victor Li, and Srisankar Kunniyur.) * Visibility-based shadowing propagation model for wireless networks contributed by Wei Ye. * A Smoothed Round Robin scheduler has been integrated into ns by Xuan Chen. * The Asim package by Debojyoti Dutta has been integrated into ns. Asim is an analytic solver for steady-state behavior of both long and short TCP flows. One application is scenario pre-filtering, to limit full ns runs to interesting scenarios. * The ModelGen tool by Kun-chan Lan generates traffic models from raw traces of web and FTP traffic. The CDF files generated by ModelGen can then be used by the empweb/empftp to model web and FTP traffic in ns. Updated Modules: ----------------- * New version of DSR contributed by Yih-Chun Hu (CMU). * New version of AODV (implementing version 6 of AODV draft) contributed by Elizabeth M. Belding-Royer. * The MRG32k3a random number generator (by Pierre L'Ecuyer) has been added to ns by Michele C. Weigle to replace the LCG16807 random number generator used previously. Note that the output of scripts using random numbers will be different when run under this version of ns than under previous versions due to the new random number generator. * Error models can now affect incoming packets as well as outgoing packets. * Satellite enhancements: support for wired/satellite integration, support for tracing satellite aloha collisions, now uses same "$ns node-config" syntax as wireless nodes. * Emulation code ported to Linux. * A first pass has been made in adding a new extensible trace format designed to replace all current trace formats. It is turned off by default. Bug fixes : ------------ * Retransmit timer in two-way TCP was not backing off correctly when the timestamp option was turned on. ECN with small windows was fixed. * One-way TCP fixes: TCP/IP header sizes are considered when calculating packet sizes. When "syn_" is used, the first 40-byte packet now consists of header bytes only, with no data bytes used. TCP can now deal with outstanding packets from the previous incarnation of a connection after a reset. * TCP retransmit timers now comply with RFC 2988. In addition, the granularity of the timers has been changed from 0.1 to 0.01 seconds. * Bug fixes and changes made to mac-802.11: PLCP now transmitted at fixed rate of 1 Mbps, control packets now sent at rate in Basic data set, plus other fixes. * Snoop works again, thanks to a patch from Benyuan Liu. * More error checking in Scheduler::schedule, linux floating point fix from Tom Kelly. * Nam trace file annotations are now generated in the correct format and no longer generate warnings from nam. What's new in nam-1.0a11 --------------------------- * Support for several loss models and queue types, as well as Exponential, Pareto, and Telnet traffic sources has been added to the nam editor. * Node movement can be added using the nam editor. * Spurious warnings concerning namgraph trace file flags removed. -- Tim Buchheim From buchheim@ISI.EDU Mon Jul 8 09:09:55 2002 Received: from tnt.isi.edu (tnt.isi.edu [128.9.128.128]) by gamma.isi.edu (8.11.6/8.11.2) with ESMTP id g68G9tE21061 for ; Mon, 8 Jul 2002 09:09:55 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ski.isi.edu (ski.isi.edu [128.9.160.134]) by tnt.isi.edu (8.11.6/8.11.2) with ESMTP id g68G9tD23865 for ; Mon, 8 Jul 2002 09:09:55 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from buchheim@localhost) by ski.isi.edu (8.11.6/8.11.6) id g68G9tU23528; Mon, 8 Jul 2002 09:09:55 -0700 X-Authentication-Warning: ski.isi.edu: buchheim set sender to buchheim@isi.edu using -f From: Tim Buchheim To: ns-announce@ISI.EDU Content-Type: text/plain Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: Ximian Evolution 1.0.3 (1.0.3-6) Message-Id: <1026144595.23429.4.camel@ski.isi.edu> Mime-Version: 1.0 Subject: [Ns-announce] release announcement -- ns 2.1b9a / nam 1.0a11a Sender: ns-announce-admin@isi.edu Errors-To: ns-announce-admin@isi.edu X-BeenThere: ns-announce@isi.edu X-Mailman-Version: 2.0.5 Precedence: bulk List-Help: List-Archive: Date: Mon Jul 8 09:10:04 2002 X-Original-Date: 08 Jul 2002 09:09:55 -0700 Release Announcement * ns 2.1b9a * nam 1.0a11a This release fixes several problems in ns 2.1b9 and nam 1.0a11 which made them difficult to compile on certain platforms. It also fixes a few small bugs, as listed below. This release does NOT add significant new features, and therefore you do not need to upgrade if you already have a working ns 2.1b9 installation. On the other hand, if you have had difficulty compiling ns 2.1b9, this release may solve your problems. The changes contained in this release will also be available in CVS snapshots after July 4, 2002. For the convenience of Windows users who may not have the necessary development tools installed, precompiled binary releases of ns and nam are available on the ns web site. http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/ns/ Fixes in ns 2.1b9a: * It now compiles with C++ compilers which don't support STL. * It can once again be compiled with Visual C++ on Windows. * Emulation now works on Linux distributions such as SUSE and Debian which put pcap.h in /usr/include rather than /usr/include/pcap. * fixed "strcasestr" naming problem on FreeBSD * fixed "bcache" naming problem on Solaris * fixed i386 assembly language parsing problem with gcc 2.95.4 in common/tclAppInit.cc * TrafficTrace now opens files in binary mode so it works correctly on Windows. Fixes in nam 1.0a11a: * It can once again be compiled with Visual C++ on Windows. (It still requires a special static build of Tcl/Tk 8.0, as noted in INSTALL.WIN3. For this reason, we strongly recommend the use of the precompiled binary of nam for Windows users.) * It now works if the path to your home directory contains spaces (this was a problem on most Windows XP installations). * Pathnames containing backslash characters (common on Windows) now work when specified on the command line. * Eliminated some bugs which may have caused crashes on Windows. -- Tim Buchheim From haldar@ISI.EDU Wed Sep 4 12:54:24 2002 Received: from vapor.isi.edu (vapor.isi.edu [128.9.64.64]) by gamma.isi.edu (8.11.6/8.11.2) with ESMTP id g84JsJD27813; Wed, 4 Sep 2002 12:54:21 -0700 (PDT) Received: from spa.isi.edu (spa.isi.edu [128.9.160.60]) by vapor.isi.edu (8.11.6/8.11.2) with ESMTP id g84JsIG06997; Wed, 4 Sep 2002 12:54:18 -0700 (PDT) From: Padmaparna Haldar To: ns-users@ISI.EDU, , , , Linda Briesemeister Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Subject: [Ns-announce] NS Tutorial Announcement Sender: ns-announce-admin@isi.edu Errors-To: ns-announce-admin@isi.edu X-BeenThere: ns-announce@isi.edu X-Mailman-Version: 2.0.5 Precedence: bulk List-Help: List-Archive: Date: Wed Sep 4 12:55:05 2002 X-Original-Date: Wed, 4 Sep 2002 12:54:18 -0700 (PDT) We would like to announce an NS tutorial/workshop to be held at Information Sciences Institute, Los Angeles on Nov 21 and 22, 2002. This tutorial is intended for users, researchers and developers who would like to use ns more actively, or extend its functionality. We will discuss the primary components of the simulator (the scheduler, connection oriented and connectionless protocols, trace support, routing, topology generation, multicast support, queue management), and discuss various issues like adding new routing or transport protocols, diffserv applications, how to use nam and the new nam-editor, a brief introduction to OTcl, how to debug ns using the OTcl and C++ interfaces etc. The format of this tutorial will be very similar to the previous ns tutorials/workshops we have held (look at http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/ns/ns-tutorial/) with updates based on functionality added to the ns simulator recently (including new wireless support, diffserv etc). In addition, for attendees to get hands-on experience using ns, exercises in various levels will be given as lectures progress in breadth and depth. So please bring your laptop to the tutorial. Laptops with linux/freeBSD are encouraged though windows should also not be a problem. Also attendees are expected to have a basic understanding of C++. For this event there will be a charge of $50 to cover meals on both days, copying cost for tutorial material and a CD-ROM. For registration as well as for details about the tutorial please go to http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/ns/ns-tutorial/tutorial-02/ Due to a fixed number of seating, the total number of people we can accomodate at the tutorial may be limited. This release of ns also comes with new releases of nam (v1.9), tclcl(v1.0b13) and ns-allinone(v2.26) pkg. The ns/nam release has many new features/modules as well as several bug-fixes which are listed in brief below. The tarfiles for ns-allinone, ns and nam src codes are called as following: ns-allinone-2.26.tar.gz ns-src-2.26.tar.gz nam-src-1.9.tar.gz You can download these latest release versions (by HTTP) from http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/dist/ and by FTP from ftp://ftp.isi.edu/nsnam/. The ns-build page at http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/ns/ns-build.html should be updated to show the release by midnight today. Please send all your comments and bug-reports to ns-users@isi.edu Thanks, --Padma Haldar --------------------------------------------------------------------------- New version numbering for ns and nam --------------------------------------- As of this release we are changing the ns and nam version numbering scheme from 2.1b10 (major.minor alpha/beta increment) to simply 2.26 (major.minor). Unlike typical software that goes through well defined cycles of alpha/beta development towards a release, different parts of ns are at different levels of maturity. For example, the TCP code is quite mature, while the newest S-MAC code is still at an alpha stage. Thus, the distinctions in the old numbering scheme were not useful. We call the new release 2.26 because it's the 26th release in the ns-2 series. Our hope is that this version will be less confusing than the alternatives, and a clear shift in the version numbering scheme. Similarly, the current nam release is nam-1.9. What's new in ns-2.26 -------------------------- * SMAC, a MAC protocol for wireless sensor networks added to ns. SMAC, designed by WeiYe improves energy consumption by allowing periodic sleep-wakeup cycles for nodes. Read mac/smac.cc for details on functionalities supported in this first-cut version of smac. * GEAR added to directed diffusion, to allow geographically limited diffusion. * Simple web server model added to reflect server's processing delay for web traffic. This model supports two scheduling policies: first-come-first-serve and shortest-task-first. * Extend web traffic model to support traffic generation according to HTTP log files. * QuickStart TCP was ported into ns. QuickStart is an experimental proposal to allow end nodes to ask permission from routers for high initial sending rates. * Couple of new schedulers were added : -STL based map scheduler from George Riley. -Splay scheduler from Yuri Pryadkin. A splay scheduler provides good average case-performance. In practice, we found that the calendar scheduler remains faster, however, and so the default scheduler has not been changed. * LMS (light-weight multicast) module added to ns. * JoBS, a new queuing discipline that provides quality-of-service (QoS) to traffic aggregates contributed by Nicolas Christin was ported into ns. Extensions and bug-fixes ------------------------- * Mac-802.11 now allows random slot selection in the contention window everytime a brdcast or an RTS pkt is sent out. Fix provided by Fred Stann. * mac-802.3 now supports packet reference counting which results in memory saving. * Added support for fullTCP and variable packet size for RAMP. * Event-tracing added to SRM and PGM. * Several functonalities were added and bug fixes made to directed diffusion module. The current diffusion module in ns corresponds to 3.1.3 version of the testbed implementation. See SCADDS page at http://www.isi.edu/scadds/software for details on the latest directed diffusion (testbed) release available. * Improved animation for broadcast packets in nam. See below in "what's new in nam-1.9" for details. * The ns source code (including the emulation module) now builds on Darwin (mac OS X).The ns source also builds for gcc-3 systems (like Redhat Linux 8.0). * A bug in DSR causing large TTL drops due to packets looping now fixed. Also added a priority-queue for DSR that maintains separate queues for different priority classes like routing, real-time, arp and normal packets. * Several bug-fixes and improvements made to calendar and real-time scheduler that enhances the scheduler speed and performance. * Several bug-fixes and enhancements made to emulation code. * Several bug-fixes were made to TCP and drop-tail/RED queue implementations. What's new in nam-1.9 ----------------------- * Improved animation for broadcast packets in nam includes: Broadcast packets used to be animated in real time, not virtual time. so if you changed the playback speed (or even paused it) the circles would always expand at the same real rate. Now, the animation is done in virtual time, like all other objects. So if you slow down the playback rate, the circles will move slower. If you increase playback rate, they move faster. The animation speed for brdcast packets can now be set using: v -t 0.0 -e set_bcast_duration 0.02 Previously a hardcoded value was used. * Wireless and wired nodes can now be mixed with better results. This requires using the "W" event as well as supplying X and Y coordinates for all nodes in the scenario. * wireless broadcast packets now use "r" events when animating in reverse, just like non-broadcast packets. (previously they used the "h" event even when going backwards). * The range and duration of the animation of wireless packets can now be specified on either a per-packet basis or by setting global parameters. I am trying to set up two different base stations together with some mobile nodes attached to them. However, when I try to run my simulation script, I get the error below: ------------------------------------------------------ Error!! str2addr:Address 4561175 outside range of address field length 1024 ------------------------------------------------------ I checked the hierarchical addresses that I assigned but cannot spot any problem with them. It appears that all the mobile nodes for the first base station are attached properly but not for the second base station. Do you know what may be causing this error or have you come across any similar situations before? The current scenario that I am using involves two wired nodes connected to two base stations and each base station has been configured to have 6 mobile nodes attached to it. Many thanks beforehand for your cooperation and looking forward to hear from you. This release of ns also comes with new releases of nam (v1.10), otcl(1.8), tclcl(1.15) and ns-allinone(v2.27) pkg. The ns/nam release has many new features/modules and bug-fixes which are listed in brief below. Please send all your comments and bug-reports to ns-users@isi.edu Thanks, --Padma Haldar What's new in ns-2.27 ----------------------- * otcl, tclcl, ns and nam has been upgraded to use tcl/tk8.4.5 libraries. * Wireless radio simulations are now faster thanks to an optimization contributed by [Val Naomov etal] from ETH. This list-based improvement has been observed to make large simulations 4-20x faster. See paper [http://www.lst.inf.ethz.ch/research/publications/MSWiM_2003.html] for details. * Modified version of setdest (scenario/node-movement generator for wireless scenarios) that supports steady-state speed distribution (in addition to previous modes). Contributed by Univ. of Michigan. * SCTP ported into ns-2. Contributed by Univ. of Delaware * A hybrid analytic/packet-based worm model for simulating internet worm attacks now available. It supports two worm scanning behaviors: random and local-preferred. Contributed by Xuan Chen of USC. * New module Delayer for introducing delay variation and channel allocation delay. This is useful for modeling the effects of wireless links. Contributed by Andrei Gurtov. * The Infrastructure mode for 802.11 MAC is now integrated into ns. The (access point) AP part of the code was contributed by Mike Morton. Aditi kapoor added the concept of a basic service set (BSS) which is a set of stations that form adhoc network or ar e controlled by a central entity called the AP. Each BSS is on a dirrent channel. Nodes are allowed to change their BSS. Also pkts are exchanged between BSS through wire links. However the scan/join functionality of BSS are not supported. * The directed diffusion module in ns continued to be updated. The current version in ns is 3.2.0. New testcases added for 2 phase-pull, push, 1 phase-pull and gear (with push and 2pp) scenarios. Added API that allows diffusion-enabled nodes to add differ ent filters (push, 1PP, 2PP, log etc). * Script color-event.pl added under ~ns/bin that takes event/color pairs and colors pkts which then get highlighted in nam. This uses event-tracing mechanism in ns and can be helpful in vizualising certain events in nam. * Improved portability for C++ namespaces (required for gcc-3.2 where the standard C++ libraries like iostream are in namespace stl only). what's new in nam-1.10/otcl-1.8/tclcl-1.15 -------------------------------------------- Changes in configure to reflect the changed version of tcl/tk (8.4.5) libs. It is linked from the project wiki also: - http://nsnam.isi.edu/nsnam/index.php/Main_Page The package name is ns-allinone-2.29.3.tar.gz. Its md5sum is 1b57f93bfeee311cab0780eb03baae0c This is purely a maintenance release for better installation on gcc 4.1.0 systems such as Fedora Core 5 and for installation on x86_64 Linux platforms. Otherwise, it contains identical simulation code to the previous ns-2.29 release (i.e., it does not have a current CVS snapshot). If you already have ns-2.29 release or current snapshot running, you will probably want to ignore this release. Thanks to Qihe Wang for providing the gcc 4.1.0 patch (was previously posted on the ns-users mailing list). We are calling it the ns-3 project, and the PIs also include Sally Floyd, George Riley, and Sumit Roy. We also have a collaboration with the Planete group at INRIA Sophia Antipolis, where Mathieu Lacage has been the main developer. Broadly, the overall goals of ns-3 are to redesign the simulator in the following areas: - software architecture - integration of existing networking software - updated models - educational use and to perform software maintenance. More details can be found at the following page: http://nsnam.isi.edu/nsnam/index.php/Ns-3 The project funding will allow us to staff full-time programmers and to fund student work on ns. We will devote some resources to continued maintenance of ns-2 while we work on developing ns-3. We intend for the NSF funding to be the seed for a broader open source simulation project for the research and educational community. We invite other research groups and individuals to participate in ns-3 development, review, discussion, and code contribution. We plan to use the ns-developers mailing list for subsequent discussions, so if you're interested, please subscribe there. Release 3.1 (2008/06/30) ======================== The first ns-3 stable release ----------------------------- This release is immediately available from: http://www.nsnam.org/releases/ns-3.1.tar.bz2 We dedicate this initial ns-3 release to our late contributor and friend, Federico Maguolo. What is ns-3 ? -------------- ns-3 is a new discrete-event network simulator designed for supporting network research and education. ns-3 features a solid, well documented C++ core and models for TCP/IP (IPv4), several link types including WiFi, and mobility models. ns-3 is an open source project released under the GNU GPLv2 license which allows anyone to use ns-3 without having to pay any license fee or royalties. ns-3 is actively seeking new contributors to extend the range of supported models and/or to maintain existing models. Where to get more information about ns-3 ---------------------------------------- All the ns-3 documentation, is accessible from the ns-3 website: http://www.nsnam.org Including, tutorials: http://www.nsnam.org/tutorials.html Supported platforms ------------------- ns-3 is regularly tested on the following platforms: - linux x86 gcc 4.2, 4.1, and, 3.4.6. - linux x86_64 gcc 4.1.3, 4.2.1, 3.4.6 - MacOS X ppc and x86 - cygwin gcc 3.4.4 (debug only) Known issues ------------ ns-3 is known to fail on the following platforms: - gcc 3.3 and earlier - optimized builds on gcc 3.4.4 and 3.4.5 - optimized builds on linux x86 gcc 4.0.x The IPv4 API defined in src/node/ipv4.h is expected to undergo major changes in preparation of the merge of the IPv6 API and implementation. Future releases --------------- Our next release, which is expected to happen in 2 to 4 months from now, will feature the merging of some of our projects currently in development: python scripting, IPv6, emulation, a statistics framework and synchronous posix sockets. Downloads are available at the Sourceforge project pages: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=149743 File checksums are located in the corresponding release notes on Sourceforge. ns-2.34 is mainly a maintenance release with the following major differences from ns-2.33: 1) AOMDV (On-demand Multipath Distance Vector Routing in Ad Hoc Networks) implementation 2) Tmix synthetic Internet traffic generation tool 3) Collection of bug fixes for 802.11Ext model In addition, the recent Linux distributions (especially Fedora Core 10) started to have problems with the previous releases, so there are some fixes aimed at better 64-bit support and support for Fedora Core 10 (thanks to John Heidemann and Amir Habibi for working these issues). A more descriptive change log is available at: http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/ns/CHANGES.html. The nam-1.14 release is purely a maintenance release with no new features. If people encounter problems with these releases, please post suggestions to the ns-developers mailing list, or file a bug report: http://nsnam.isi.edu/nsnam/index.php/Contributing#Reporting_a_bug For troubleshooting or workaround tips, please consult (and contribute to) the following wiki page: http://nsnam.isi.edu/nsnam/index.php/Troubleshooting From libathin@ceid.upatras.gr Fri Jul 10 01:05:28 2009 Received: from vapor.isi.edu (vapor.isi.edu [128.9.64.64]) by gamma.isi.edu (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id n6A84naI008451 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NOT); Fri, 10 Jul 2009 01:04:51 -0700 (PDT) Received: from poseidon.ceid.upatras.gr (poseidon.ceid.upatras.gr [150.140.141.169]) by vapor.isi.edu (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id n6A84KCQ007400; Fri, 10 Jul 2009 01:04:23 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mail.ceid.upatras.gr (unknown [10.1.0.143]) by poseidon.ceid.upatras.gr (Postfix) with ESMTP id 28009EB4AAC; Fri, 10 Jul 2009 11:04:19 +0300 (EEST) Received: from localhost (europa.ceid.upatras.gr [127.0.0.1]) by mail.ceid.upatras.gr (Postfix) with ESMTP id F1622450F2; Fri, 10 Jul 2009 11:04:18 +0300 (EEST) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at ceid.upatras.gr Received: from mail.ceid.upatras.gr ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (europa.ceid.upatras.gr [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 8Lb0QkDx2oqs; Fri, 10 Jul 2009 11:04:18 +0300 (EEST) Received: by mail.ceid.upatras.gr (Postfix, from userid 48) id C9341450ED; Fri, 10 Jul 2009 11:04:18 +0300 (EEST) Received: from 79.129.12.228 by webmail.ceid.upatras.gr with HTTP; Fri, 10 Jul 2009 11:04:18 +0300 (EEST) Message-ID: <18777.79.129.12.228.1247213058.squirrel@webmail.ceid.upatras.gr> Date: Fri, 10 Jul 2009 11:04:18 +0300 (EEST) From: "Nikos Livathinos" To: ns-announce@ISI.EDU, ns-users@ISI.EDU, ns-edu@ISI.EDU User-Agent: SquirrelMail/1.4.8-4.0.1.el5 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain;charset=utf-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Importance: Normal X-ISI-4-43-8-MailScanner: Found to be clean, Found to be clean X-MailScanner-From: libathin@ceid.upatras.gr X-Mailman-Approved-At: Fri, 10 Jul 2009 11:02:19 -0700 Subject: [Ns-announce] EXtensible Animator for Mobile Simulations X-BeenThere: ns-announce@isi.edu X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.6 Precedence: list List-Id: "Ns and nam announcement" List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 10 Jul 2009 08:05:32 -0000 Hello NS-2 community, I am glad to announce the availability of the EXtensible Animator for Mobile Simulations (EXAMS). EXAMS is a visualization tool for wireless NS-2 simulations. EXAMS is an open source project available online at: http://www.livathinos.gr/EXAMS_overview.aspx EXAMS’ goal is to help the researcher understand the mobile routing protocol with an exact visual representation of the NS-2 simulation outcome, while at the same time enabling him to control the animation process. It can visualize network layout, animate mobile nodes’ movements, playback packets exchange at routing and agent level, give user the ability to freely move forward and backwards in simulation time and depict the network partitions according to given radio range. As regards data transmissions EXAMS can portray source and destination address, network level (routing or agent), direction, flow sequence and other. Moreover EXAMS keeps detailed statistics about data being sent, received, forwarded or dropped on a node and network basis EXAMS has been designed with the protocol developer in mind and provides a complete environment to study, test and debug wireless network protocols. Its unique characteristic is its extensible architecture which makes it possible to visualize network protocol’s internal data structures like routing tables, values for protocol’s state variables, protocol specific packet types - in fact anything inside the trace file. Technically this is achievable through protocol extensions which are developed by the protocol designer himself and are responsible to visualize protocol’s data according to its own semantics. Additionally the visual environment of EXAMS incorporates many user friendly features like: - Fast jump to a specific line of the trace file. - Zoom in/out capability. - Filtering of network traffic according to routing and/or agent layer. - Screenshots capture to external image file. - Color and shape codes for data transmission. - Extensive usage of keyboard shortcuts.
