From llp at CS.Princeton.EDU Tue Jun 1 11:44:50 2004 From: llp at CS.Princeton.EDU (Larry Peterson) Date: Tue Jun 1 11:47:39 2004 Subject: [KP] example services Message-ID: Just sending along pointers to two papers that seem relevant to the knowledge plane. The first, Characteristics of Internet Background Radiation. R. Pang, V. Yegneswaran, P. Barford, V. Paxson, and L. Peterson. http://www.cs.princeton.edu/nsg/papers/telescope.pdf describes our preliminary experience monitoring "background radiation" on unused IP addresses. This is an example of a sensor that might plug into the KP. The second, PlanetSeer: Internet Path Failure Monitoring and Characterization in Wide-Area Services. M. Zhang, C. Zhang, V. Pai, L. Peterson, and R. Wang. http://www.cs.princeton.edu/nsg/papers/planetseer.pdf describes how we have instrumented a wide-area service (a CDN that runs on 150 nodes and initiates lots of TCP traffic) to passively monitor TCP connections, and engage a widely-distributed probing mechanism to diagnose suspected failures. This is an example of a diagnostic tool, although it is "stand-alone", as opposed to plugged into a general KP framework. Larry P.S. Both papers are conference submissions (and hence, submitted-at-11:59pm-rough), but neither are encumbered by a double-blinded review process.
