This paper makes the case that an enhanced routing and forwarding model is required to efficiently implement the knowledge plane that supports multiple paths to a given destination, computed in the context of administrative policies and multiple link metrics, and presents some preliminary work we've done on such a model. All comments on the paper will be greatly appreciated... especially regarding how the routing/forwarding plane abstraction (i.e. the "knobs") we propose to present to the KP could be put to use by the cognitive engines people are considering. It should be read with great reservation, but perhaps it will start some conversation. The particular problem that is used to motivate the proposal is what I have been calling the FIXIT problem (a descendent of the WHY problem.) The user thinks something is wrong, and says FIXIT. What happens then? This note is an outgrowth of a conversation I had with Tom Deitterich and Pat Langley, who contributes many of the thoughts that went into this. the paper mentions the concept of a "success story", which is an idea I floated a while back to a smaller group. I attach that message here so you can see what I am referring to. Dave Success Stories: I want to try an alternative formulation of the WHY/FIXIT problem. Most of the email on this topic focuses on cataloging and diagnosing failures. We have used the analogy of "car won't start, so with P =.x, battery is dead..." (not exactly, but I hope the memory is clear. ) I think this formulation has some problems, and misses some information that lurks in the system. One problem is that the number of faults is unbounded, and users are hopelessly creative in finding new ways to fail. So a catalog of faults is forever growing, and very hard to structure. We could fight for years over what the ontology of faults is. Second, many of the things we do on the network are very sequential. That is, the event is not a one-shot event: "Turn the key-nothing happens", but a series of steps "First get the dns name from the url, then resolve the name to an address, then...) The failure occurs at some point along this path, and if we only knew where we had failed, this in itself is a great first step in diagnosis. So here is an idea. Instead of cataloging failures and faults, let's tell success stories. A success story describes something going right, e.g. "A successful Web query", or "David actually sends email". These stories look like little programs (or program specifications), or perhaps like state machines. They describe the actions at each stage, the invariants that should hold, timing expectations, and so on. And when the user tries to do something, the system compares what the user does to the success story. If the user succeeds, great. Alternatively, some step of the story may not succeed. The story might contain a sub-story called "use DNS to translate a name to an address", and somewhere inside that story might be a step that says "DNS reply comes back", and that step might not succeed (or might time out). Now if the system "knows" where in the story the failure is, then we have a bunch of information. We have a failure in its context. We know what the user was trying to do at the time that something did not happen. Because we have a description of what _should_ happen, we can categorize the actual event as a failure, which we might not otherwise be able to do. Success stories are told top down, from the perspective of the user and the high-level application. So this provides a way to inject application-specific information into the system. Success stories are not told in a layered way, but as a sequence of steps to a goal. Of course, we will not get the success story exactly right, especially at first. So this implies that there are actually three outcomes from trying to do something: a success (the story comes out right at the end), a failure (the story fails at a recognized place) and a surprise (the story seems fine but the user hits the WHY/FIXIT button.) When this happens, one consequence is that the success story can be enriched with this new part that describes what the step was that was expected but did not happen. (If I can take a total leap, this might be a form of learning.) What I am trying to do is get away from looking at fault diagnosis as data-gathering. The original cognitive hypothesis was that we would build a system that knew what it was supposed to be doing. It knew its goals, and compared them to what was happening. This picture seems to make sense to us when we talk about BUILD. State the high-level goals and hope the KP can derive the lower level details. I think we should try to formulate the FIXIT problem in these terms. The KP should know what is _supposed_ to be happening, and detect a problem when reality deviates from the goal, the success story. to further confuse things, it is possible that a success story is the same thing as a constraint. That is, a success story describes a set of paths through a set of mechanisms. If the process does not succeed in getting to the end of the path, this could be viewed as a failure of the constraints on the process. As someone said in a recent message, it is often easier to describe the behaviors ("turn right, then left in two blocks") than to work from high level goals ("here is a map, here is how to read a map") Success stories are expressed in terms of behaviors along a path. One implication is that they allow further constraints to be imposed after the fact: ("the story allows for the option of using an IP address in a URL but this other constraint forbids that path
