From bmanning@ISI.EDU Wed Jun 12 16:57:10 2002 From: bmanning@ISI.EDU (Bill Manning) Date: Wed, 12 Jun 2002 08:57:10 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [vet-DS]prelim? Message-ID: <200206121557.g5CFvAo19807@boreas.isi.edu> So... This has taken longer than expected. Based on my recent queries re: implementation catalog, there seems to be enough response to schedule some time to start doing some more formal testing of various DS implementations. Right now, there are three verifiable server implementations and a couple more "in process". No one has indicated availability of DS resolver availability. For planning purposes, a couple of folks have suggested a session would be worthwhile just prior to the upcoming RIPE mtg, perhaps in Reykjavik. Suggestions centering around the end of Sept have been floated. How do these two data points "feel" to the assembled masses? -- --bill From bmanning@ISI.EDU Thu Jun 13 19:27:10 2002 From: bmanning@ISI.EDU (Bill Manning) Date: Thu, 13 Jun 2002 11:27:10 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [vet-DS]areas for testing In-Reply-To: from Sam Weiler at "Jun 13, 2 00:14:20 am" Message-ID: <200206131827.g5DIRA324627@boreas.isi.edu> Thanks for the call. I think that there are a number of areas that DS needs to be exercised: ) internal consistancy - one could take reference implementation and validate that it does what the spec calls for. ) "ease of use" - intuitive tools that help the DNS admin do her job. ADB is not a candidate. Likely to be iumplementation specific ) server/server - here is where we need multiple implementations. ) server/resolver interaction - what is missing is a usable resolver. Some are purported to exist, but nothing offical. Its this last thing that seems to have held up DS testing thus far. I would expect that implementors are doing some internal consistancy checking on their code. Tools are primarly implementation specific (imho) and ther has been some server/server ad-hoc testing. I'd love to see more implementations have the internal checks done and made available for testing under the last two items. -- --bill From weiler@tislabs.com Thu Jun 20 07:38:05 2002 From: weiler@tislabs.com (Sam Weiler) Date: Thu, 20 Jun 2002 02:38:05 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [vet-DS]DS code & testing day Message-ID: I'm pleased to announce the availability of Nominum's BIND DS implementation. I'll try to send some documentation in the next few days. ftp://ftp.isc.org/isc/bind9/snapshots/bind-9.3.0s20020618.tar.gz We (Network Associates Laboratories) have done some testing of this code, and I think it's ready for more widespread testing. In particular, I'd like to hold a one (or maybe two) day mini-workshop before the IETF at our offices in Rockville, Maryland. I understand that many who would otherwise attend a workshop may be unable to do so on such short notice and so close to the IETF, but I think there's much to be gained even if we can't get the usual broad participation. To repeat: -- July 3rd (and/or 2nd) -- Rockville, Maryland (near Washington, DC) -- bring-your-own-laptop and network card -- primarily testing with Nominum's DS code announced above If you're interested in attending, please let me know the following: -- would you prefer a one or two day event? -- which of July 2nd and 3rd are you available? -- do you have some other DS implementation (server or resolver) or tools that you'd like to test? -- do you need hotel information? Based on the feedback I receive, I'll try to send a real announcement no later than Monday. -- Sam From brunner@nic-naa.net Thu Jun 20 22:34:30 2002 From: brunner@nic-naa.net (Eric Brunner-Williams in Portland Maine) Date: Thu, 20 Jun 2002 17:34:30 -0400 Subject: [vet-DS]DS code & testing day In-Reply-To: Your message of "Thu, 20 Jun 2002 02:38:05 EDT." I've cc'd the list in the off-chance there are others with a similar preference. We'll be hosting a one-day DS workshop on Wednesday, July 3rd in Rockville, Maryland starting at 9:45AM. The main purpose is to get people working with Nominum's DS code and doing routine zone operations. Some participants will have other implementations and tools, so there'll be a bit of interoperability testing. Please drop a note to dstest@tislabs.com if you'd like to attend. I'll send out trusted keys, delegations, IP assignments, and directions in advance -- let me know if you need any additional information or accomodations. -- Sam On Thu, 20 Jun 2002, Sam Weiler wrote: > I'm pleased to announce the availability of Nominum's BIND DS > implementation.
