DG Research Helps Predict Urban Growth
Computer simulation may also help with disaster and re-building
scenarios
By Karen Heyman
http://www.digitalgovernment.org/news/stories/2005/1105/
1105_borning_heyman.jsp
Borning says you can think of UrbanSim as "SimCity: Professional
Edition." In several
ways, it is like the popular computer game, although he confesses,
without Godzilla. But
what it lacks in city-squashing monsters, it makes up for in a
sophisticated ability to model
potential growth scenarios decades into the future, with real cost
numbers. Unlike the game,
where changing one key variable, like raising taxes, can cause the
Sim-citizens to revolt,
UrbanSim looks at the complicated interplay of realistic decisions
based on data from
local and regional government agencies including transportation
networks, census data, parcel
ownership data, employment data, economic data, and environmental data,
including buildable
versus non-buildable land.
A Special NSF Report: Understanding Disasters
http://www.nsf.gov/news/special_reports/disasters/index.jsp
Without a comprehensive understanding of disasters, it is impossible to
prepare
for them. Knowledge is critical, whether for determining how weather
systems
develop, estimating the path of volcanic debris, recognizing triggers
before
a ground-shaking seismic event, or even gauging how an individuals
decisions
from a utility employee to a public official can put entire
communities at risk.
NSF Initiates Comprehensive Strategic Planning Process
NSF's Cyberinfrastructure Council has initiated a comprehensive
strategic planning
process to guide the agency's investments in cyberinfrastructure - the
IT-based
infrastructure increasingly essential to progress in science and
engineering.
The agency’s plans are being developed in a document entitled NSF’s
Cyberinfrastructure Vision for 21st Century Discovery.
NSF invites community comments on the current draft of this document,
which is
available at http://www.nsf.gov/od/oci/CI-v40.pdf .
Comments should be provided via email to: ciinput at nsf.gov.
Future drafts of the document will be released as the agency’s plans
are shaped by
community input, and as new chapters are developed.
NSF plans to release the first complete version of this living document
in the Spring of 2006."
The GENI Initiative
http://www.nsf.gov/cise/geni/
The Directorate for Computer and Information Science and
Engineering(CISE)
is planning an Initiative called Global Environment forNetworking
Investigations
or GENI to explore new networking capabilities that will advance
science and
stimulate innovation and economic growth. The GENI Initiative responds
to
an urgent and important challenge of the 21st Century to advance
significantly
the capabilities provided by networking and distributed system
architectures.
