Here are some summaries and action items for where APRUNet stands at the beginning of this year: 1. APRUNet Distance Learning Web Sites At the APRUNet Singapore meeting, there was consensus that it would be interesting and helpful to have a web site portal on the APRU web site for for each APRU university's distance learning activities. Please send me a URL to a distance learning portal or web site at your institution. I would like to receive these by 14 January 2004 so that we can examine and discuss them during the Honolulu meeting. Please send URLs to . 2. APRUNet Meeting Singapore December 2003 The slides of the APRUNet meeting that was held on 02 December 2003 in Singapore are available at . 3. APRUNet Meeting Honolulu Janurary 2004 The next APRUNet meeting is scheduled for 27 January 2004 at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu in conjunction with the Internet2 Joint Techs and APAN meetings. Please RSVP to if you plan to attend. 4. APRUNet Global Infectious Diseases project . Of interest to GID members: Note that there will be a session on genomics and telemedicine at the Honolulu meeting. "Genome and Telemedicine Meeting" on 29 January 2004 in Room F from 16:00-17:30. 5. APRUNet Online Distance Learning Discussion List . This is a new discussion list that was requested at the previous APRUNet meeting in Busan, Korea in August 2003. It is open to all APRU institutions. Please subscribe (see URL above)! 6. APRUNet Marie and Ocean Biology project . Louis Fox (U Washington) presented some information on the JASON Project at the APRUNet meeting in Singapore. Please see the web site at . The JASON Project is a multi-disciplinary program that sparks the imagination of students and enhances the classroom experience. From oceans to rain forests, from polar regions to volcanoes, the JASON Project explores Planet Earth and exposes students to leading scientists who work with them to examine its biological and geological development. The idea of virtual aquariums of coastal systems around the world were also discussed. Please suggest comments and ideas for how APRUNet and APRU universities would be interested in interacting by joining the mailing list (see URL above) and sending to the mailing list . 7. APRUNet East Asian Studies project . Myungkoo Kung (Seoul National) presented some information on a course based on multipoint videoconferences with Seoul National University, University of Tokyo, National University of Singapore, and University of Southern California to be held in the Fall 2004 semester. Probably topics include Chinese Nationalism and Globalization: Urban Youth Cultures in East Asia. APRUNet/Internet2 Videoconferencing Workshop Honolulu January 2004 The First APRUNet/Internet2 Videoconferencing Workshop that was held in Singapore on 03 December 2003 was very successful with live, live remote, and recorded remote presentations. Attendees from Australia, Canada, China, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, and the U.S. participated. This was the first workshop ever held in the Pacific Rim region. The Second APRUNet/Internet2 Videoconferencing Workshop will be held on 25 Janurary 2004 in Honolulu in conjunction with the APRUNet/Internet2 Joint Techs meetings.
