From zita at ISI.EDU Wed Jun 1 16:32:54 2005 From: zita at ISI.EDU (Zita Wenzel) Date: Wed Jun 1 16:32:04 2005 Subject: [APRU-DLP] Status of the DLPP Project Message-ID: <429E45A6.50206@isi.edu> All, I am back from hiatus, but on email sporadically due to a family illness. My evaluation of the DLPP project is as follows: - Judy Lemus' crab Global Heartbeat study is a very good one, but Judy and I have determined that there is no current plan to provide shipping/insurance and assurance/responsibility/replacement of the units. As we discussed previously, I think we should reevaluate this project for next year (when we also may have funding for the units and for the concerns listed above). - Megan Harber's Comparative Research Study of five fishes in each of the partners' regions is a good one. It will enable everyone to work on their school's timeline, and to work asynchronously but communicate via a number of media. We can provide a web site that will support this project. - If Megan's study cannot be adopted by all or most of the partners, I encourage bilateral collaborations. We have spent a good time learning about the bioscience summer school programs at our universities, and this knowledge may allow each program to work with one other school/program. In addition, I would be happy to provide support for bilateral collaborations. Please indicate ASAP if you would like to work with as many partners as possible on Megan's study. Again, the partner schools are Far Eastern National University (Alexei, Russia), University of California at San Diego (Megan Harber, USA), University of Southern California (Judy Lemus, USA), and Universidad Nacional Aut?noma de M?xico (Adolfo Gracia/Manuel Alcocer, Mexico). YES____ I plan to participate in Megan's study. NO_____ I do not plan to participate in Megan's study. If NO, I (__________________________) plan to work on a bilateral collaboration with ____________________________. Thank you for your prompt response and welcome to Summer. Megan is putting together a template so that all collected data is in the same format and can be compared. As previously discussed, we would like to place the data in a central location for all participants to access. I am trying to see if the APRU Secretariat can host the project, but the logistics of Singapore may make it difficult. Is anyone in a position to use WebCT (or another application) that all of the partners can use? I think that Megan's project is a good one. As I mentioned to Zita, our limitations with the crab heartbeat project is that, although we can provide loan units, we at USC do not have funds to cover shipping and insurance of the units to each partner. There is also the question of who would bear the costs if a unit was damaged or not returned. I was hoping that APRU would be able to cover these things, but that does not look like its possible. If there is interest, we can try the project next year, perhaps with funds from APRU or with each partner covering the shipping and insurance for each unit. Global Heartbeat is designed to be a distance learning project, so I think it could work very well with this group (and combined with Megan's comparative study). We will look into ways to incorporate Megan's project into one of our programs this year. I will have to check on whether we have WebCT... UCSD will be hosting the program which will use Megan's "five fishes" study and WebCT technology. Please let me know ASAP if your instructor and course are planning to participate. You will then be contacted to provide information so that your students can be entered into WebCT. Please comment on the form. Add the five fishes that you intend to compare. Lack of response will indicate that you approve of the six variables -- Reproduction Strategies, Foraging Behavior, Swimming -- Modes of Swimming, Life in Salinity -- How do they adapt?, Speciation -- Phylum, Order, class, Species Identifying , and Links to Interesting Web Sites. 2. Please let us know immediately that your instructor and students will be participating in the project, even if it is just a few of them, so that we can set up their WebCT accounts and move towards implementation. Thank you. Zita Zita Wenzel wrote: > All, > > We are ready to move ahead with this Summer's DLPP Program.
