The 6th APRU Distance Learning and the Internet (DLI) Conference will be held at Far Eastern National University (FENU), Vladivostok, Russia, from 4-7 October 2005. NOTE: Though the DLI2005 registration deadline is 10 September 2005, most international participants will need a Russian entry visa. To get it without expensive emergency procedures and applying for tourist visas, you have to SUBMIT YOUR REGISTRATION FORM BY 15 AUGUST. The Russian Ministry of International Affairs requires 30 days for approving the official invitations, and FENU needs a few days more to deliver the invitations to the conference participants by express mail. Only after this, the conference participants can apply for their visas to Russian Embassies and Consulates. For this reason, we advise you to register as soon as possible. For those who will be late with their registrations after 15 August, there is still a possibility to apply for a tourist visa in shorter terms, but an official invitation saves time and money. The sixth in its series, the conference aims to bring together leading, international distance learning experts from academia, business and public sectors. The theme for this year is "Linking People through Information Technology Education". The sub-themes for the Conference are namely: 1. Content development in distance and blended learning 2. Infrastructure, technology trends and challenges 3. Cultural exchanges through distance learning 4. Student issues in distance learning and the Internet Issues addressed at the Conference will include e-learning content and quality assurance, credit transfers, online degree recognition, aspects of infrastructure such as video-conferencing, technology-enabled learning, technology trends and challenges. Special interest topics for this year's conference will include student experiences and presentations in distance learning. ?The Fifth Annual "Distance Learning and the Internet" Conference was hosted by Tsinghua University, Beijing, China from 11-13 October 2004. APRUNET MEETING The next APRUNet meeting will take place at the ?Distance Learning and the Internet? conference to be held in Vladivostok, Russia. See above for details. NEWS FROM PAKISTAN EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH NETWORK (PERN) ***59 Campuses to be interconnected through PERN*** (Article shared by Javed Ali Memon, PERN) 56 universities have been interconnected through Pakistan Educational Research Network (PERN). Work is in progress to interconnect 59 more campuses, which will be completed in a year. Video Conferencing facilities to six universities will be completed in twelve weeks and International Video Conferencing facilities will be in place before October. HEC & National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) are working together closely for the implementation of PERN project. The 59 campuses to be interconnected in the second phase include multiple campuses of universities already connected and 43 private sector universities. It was decided in the meeting that 17 universities will be upgraded from copper link to wireless within a period of 10 weeks. PERN is a dedicated Educational Network for Public/Private Sector chartered Universities/Degree awarding institutes registered with the Higher Education Commission, Government of Pakistan. The interconnectivity of all these Universities/Institutes provides integration of data banks, collaboration for research and development activities and up-gradation of teaching and learning skills. 4. NEWS FROM ASEAN VIRTUAL INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (AVIST) Online Courses Offered by AVIST (Article shared by Pensri A.) AVIST is a Virtual Learning network for continuing professional development and advanced studies in science and technology with opportunities for real practical experience at participating universities. You can still join us at the Sixth International "Distance Learning and the Internet" conference hosted by Far Eastern National University in Vladivostok, Russia 4-7 October 2005. It is not too late to get a Russian tourist visa in mid September; expedited procedures in some Consulates take 24 hours, although it may be more expensive, so it makes sense to apply ASAP.
