The 6th APRU Distance Learning and the Internet (DLI) Conference will be held at Far Eastern National University (FENU), Vladivostok, Russia, from 4-7 October 2005. The sixth in its series, the conference aims to bring together leading, international distance learning experts from academia, business and public sectors. The theme for this year is "Linking People Through Information Technology Education". The sub-themes for the Conference are namely: 1. Content development in distance and blended learning 2. APRUNET DISTANCE LEARNING PARTNERSHIP PROJECT At the last APRUNet meeting held in Beijing in October 2004, we decided to restart our Distance Learning Partnership Project (DLPP) that was delayed twice due to SARS. This project is centered around collaborative international teams of high school students working with expert faculty members at APRU institutions on project of real global concern. The students will also participate in a culminating workshop or conference, perhaps in conjunction with an APRU research conference on the same topic. Videoconferencing will be used, along with email, online chat, etc. We have decided to concentrate on marine and ocean biology as the content area(s). We have already begun to hold monthly planning tele- and videoconferences. The Fellows Program is an annual APRU seminar series which examines issues of interest to the Pacific Rim. Bringing together faculty members from various disciplines, this year's Fellows Program focuses on the theme of "New Directions in Asian Studies: Ethnicity and Nationalism Before and After the Digital Age". The two-week program will include scholarly discussions and stimulating field trips. This year's program hopes to assemble faculty members from humanities and social sciences, international relations, law, political sciences, computing, economics as well as sciences and engineering, who are interested to study the issues relating to the trends of ethnicity and nationalism in Asia before and after the advent of digital technology. 7. ACCESS GRID The Access Grid? is an ensemble of resources including multimedia large-format displays, presentation and interactive environments, and interfaces to Grid middleware and to visualization environments. These resources are used to support group-to-group interactions across the Grid. For example, the Access Grid (AG) is used for large-scale distributed meetings, collaborative work sessions, seminars, lectures, tutorials, and training. The Access Grid thus differs from desktop-to-desktop tools that focus on individual communication. The Access Grid has over 1,500 users worldwide. Each institution has one or more AG nodes, or "designed spaces," that contain the high-end audio and visual technology needed to provide a high-quality compelling user experience. The nodes are also used as a research environment for the development of distributed data and visualization corridors and for the study of issues relating to collaborative work in distributed environments. The Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations (HPAIR) is a partnership between the students and faculty of Harvard University, offering a sustained academic program and a forum of exchange to facilitate discussion of the most important economic, political, and social issues relevant to the Asia-Pacific region. HPAIR's international conference has emerged as the largest annual Harvard event in Asia and the largest annual student conference in the Asia-Pacific region, attracting a wide variety of distinguished speakers and future leaders as Harvard's student outpost in Asia. Past speakers at our conferences include South Korean President Kim Young Sam, Governor General of Australia Peter Hollingworth, Singapore President S.R. PRIX ARS ELECTRONICA 2005 Prix Ars Electronica 2005 - Digital Communities Prix Ars Electronica 2005 is the 19th edition of the foremost international competition for computer-based art. In addition to the categories- Interactive Art, Net Vision, Computer Animation / Visual Effects and Digital Musics- Digital Communities and [the next idea] Art and Technology Grant competition that debuted last year will be reprised. The category "Digital Communities", which met with great interest and participation in 2004, will be awarded for the second time within Prix Ars Electronica 2005. The Digital Communities category encompasses digital community projects as well as developments in the field of social software, mobile communications or wireless networks.
