APRU ?DISTANCE LEARNING AND THE INTERNET CONFERENCE? Conference registration is now open! The 6th APRU Distance Learning and the Internet (DLI) Conference will be held at Far Eastern National University (FENU), Vladivostok, Russia, from 4-7 October 2005. The sixth in its series, the conference aims to bring together leading, international distance learning experts from academia, business and public sectors. The theme for this year is "Linking People through Information Technology Education". The sub-themes for the Conference are namely: 1. Content development in distance and blended learning 2. Infrastructure, technology trends and challenges 3. Cultural exchanges through distance learning 4. Student issues in distance learning and the Internet Issues addressed at the Conference will include e-learning content and quality assurance, credit transfers, online degree recognition, aspects of infrastructure such as video-conferencing, technology-enabled learning, technology trends and challenges. Special interest topics for this year's conference will include student experiences and presentations in distance learning. ?The Fifth Annual "Distance Learning and the Internet" Conference was hosted by Tsinghua University, Beijing, China from 11-13 October 2004. APRUNET MEETING The next APRUNet meeting will take place at the ?Distance Learning and the Internet? conference to be held in Vladivostok, Russia. See above for details. KEIO UNIVERSITY SUMMER SCHOOL AT UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON < http://www.apru.org/activities/studentmobility/> Keio University's Summer School at University of Washington is now open to APRU Universities. Keio University is opening its existing institutional summer program, to be held from 20 August - 10 September 2005, to enrollment by students from other APRU member universities. ?The Human Systems in the Pacific Northwest Bioregion Program? for Keio University students at the University of Washington has been created through collaboration between the University of Washington Program on the Environment and International Outreach Programs in consultation with Keio University. It is an intensive three-week course on environmentology, designed to introduce students from a wide range of academic and professional interests to issues and challenges encountered in an urbanizing area with plentiful natural resources. The program includes lectures, workshops, discussion, as well as a visit to the University of Washington Friday Harbour Lab Research Facilities on the San Juan Islands for seminars and hands-on experiences. Keio University would like to invite 3 exemplary students from member universities to participate in this pilot initiative taken by an APRU member university to open its existing summer programs to other APRU universities. The selected students will benefit from this opportunity to experience and interact in an intellectually-stimulating and culturally-rich learning environment. The total fees, which include program fee, accommodation and meals, amount to US$3258.85. Do take note that the closing date for application is on Friday, 10 June 2005. After the selection takes place at Keio University, the notification of acceptance will be released on Friday, 17 June 2005. APRU DOCTORAL STUDENTS CONFERENCE The APRU 6th Doctoral Students Conference will be hosted by University of Oregon from 7-12 August 2005. Please note that the new schedule is as follows: 15 April 2005: Notification of accepted abstracts 7 July 2005: Deadline for submission of final papers 7-12 August 2005: Conference Details of the conference arrangements are available at the conference website. 5. APRU FELLOWS PROGRAM ? REGISTRATION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 10 JUNE. As announced in January, the 6th APRU Fellows Program will be co-hosted by the University of British Columbia (UBC) and University of Malaya (UM) from 14-27 August 2005. Based broadly on the theme of "New Directions in Asian Studies: Ethnicity and Nationalism Before and After the Digital Age", this intensive two-week program will comprise an interesting line-up of activities to engage inquiring minds and to establish long-term collaboration between faculty members from APRU member universities. This year's program will include interactions and presentations by researchers in Asian culture, historians and immigration experts. There will also be visits and field trips to places of rich heritage involving stimulating discussions. The first week of the program (14-20 August) will be hosted by UBC and the second week (21-27 August) by UM. The Fellows Program provides a unique opportunity for fellows to extend their intellectual capacities in a multidisciplinary environment and to connect with outstanding junior faculty members who are their counterparts from top research universities around the Pacific Rim. 6. APRU RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM "Earthquakes Hazards around the Pacific Rim - Prediction and Disaster Prevention" The symposium will be held jointly with the Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU) and hosted by Kyoto University from 31 August to 2 September 2005. Please find the attached preliminary program of the research symposium. Student participation in this symposium is encouraged and awards are available for student posters. There will be optional activities on the third day. Examples of such optional activities are: workshop on tsunami and earthquakes, student session, a walk along the Hanaore earthquake fault, and sightseeing of Kyoto city.
