This project is centered around collaborative international teams of high school students working with expert faculty members at APRU institutions on project of real global concern. The students will also participate in a culminating workshop or conference, perhaps in conjunction with an APRU research conference on the same topic. Videoconferencing will be used, along with email, online chat, etc. We have decided to concentrate on marine and ocean biology as the content area(s). We have already begun to hold monthly planning tele- and videoconferences. The current members are Autonomous University of Mexico, Far Eastern National University (Vladivostock, Russia), University of California at San Diego, University of Southern California. August 7-12, 2005 University of Oregon Submission Deadline: February 14, 2005 The 6th Annual Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) Doctoral Student Conference will take place from August 7-12, 2005, at the University of Oregon campus. Doctoral students from all disciplines, including the social sciences, the humanities, and the natural sciences are invited to attend. The goal of the conference is to facilitate international communication, share research interests, and create a network of doctoral students from around the Pacific Rim. APAN IN WORLD NETWORK NSF GRANT CIREN is a proposal to connect the world's major research networks including Abilene, CAnet (Canada), APAN (Asia), GEANT (Europe), and RedCLARA (Latin America). Spearheaded by Indiana University and Internet2. The plan reinforces existing international links by proposing two new 10Gbps links to Europe (London and Geneva). APAN links are reinforced with a new 10Gbps link from Tokyo to Seattle to complement the Tokyo to Chicago link. The exchange points are well known and it would be easy to interconnect at any of these points at any level. The architecture is very flexible. HOPI will provide the U.S. portion between Chicago, New York, Seattle, and DC. Indiana University and Internet2. The sixth in its series, the conference aims to bring together leading, international distance learning experts from academia, business and public sectors. The theme for this year is "Linking People Through Information Technology Education". The sub-themes for the Conference are namely: 1. Content development in distance and blended learning 2. Infrastructure, technology trends and challenges 3. Cultural exchanges through distance learning 4. Student issues in distance learning and the Internet Issues addressed at the Conference will include e-learning content and quality assurance, credit transfers, online degree recognition, aspects of infrastructure such as video-conferencing, technology-enabled learning, technology trends and challenges. Special interest topics for this year's conference will include student experiences and presentations in distance learning. The call for papers is now open.
