APRUNET DISTANCE LEARNING PARTNERSHIP PROJECT At the last APRUNet meeting held in Beijing in October 2004, we decided to restart our Distance Learning Partnership Project (DLPP) that was delayed twice due to SARS. This project is centered around collaborative international teams of high school students working with expert faculty members at APRU institutions on project of real global concern. The students will also participate in a culminating workshop or conference, perhaps in conjunction with an APRU research conference on the same topic. Videoconferencing will be used, along with email, online chat, etc. We have decided to concentrate on marine and ocean biology as the content area(s). We have already begun to hold monthly planning tele- and videoconferences. The current members are Autonomous University of Mexico, Far Eastern National University (Vladivostok, Russia), University of California at San Diego, University of Southern California. The results of the first planning teleconference are posted at: 4. The five authors are Manuel A. Leiva (University of Chile), Kazunari Sei (Osaka University), Satoshi Soda (Osaka University), Junta Yanai (Kyoto University) and Alex Chen (University of Southern California). In view of the interest expressed by some Fellows to further their research collaboration, we are pleased to inform you that one seed grant of US$6000 is now available. Based closely on the principles of the Collaborative Research Paper Award to promote long term collaboration, the aim of this grant is to provide a small amount of seed money to facilitate the preparation of funding proposals for large projects by teams of APRU Fellows. This program will take place from 14-27 August 2005. The Fellows Program is an annual APRU seminar series which examines issues of interest to the Pacific Rim. Bringing together faculty members from various disciplines, this year's Fellows Program focuses on the theme of "New Directions in Asian Studies: Ethnicity and Nationalism Before and After the Digital Age". The two-week program will include scholarly discussions and stimulating field trips. This year's program hopes to assemble faculty members from humanities and social sciences, international relations, law, political sciences, computing, economics as well as sciences and engineering, who are interested to study the issues relating to the trends of ethnicity and nationalism in Asia before and after the advent of digital technology. 8. ACCESS GRID The Access Grid? is an ensemble of resources including multimedia large-format displays, presentation and interactive environments, and interfaces to Grid middleware and to visualization environments. These resources are used to support group-to-group interactions across the Grid. For example, the Access Grid (AG) is used for large-scale distributed meetings, collaborative work sessions, seminars, lectures, tutorials, and training. The Access Grid thus differs from desktop-to-desktop tools that focus on individual communication. The Access Grid has over 1,500 users worldwide. Each institution has one or more AG nodes, or "designed spaces," that contain the high-end audio and visual technology needed to provide a high-quality compelling user experience. The nodes are also used as a research environment for the development of distributed data and visualization corridors and for the study of issues relating to collaborative work in distributed environments. APRU universities involved in the Access Grid include: Beijing University Tsinghua University Waseda University Australian National University University of Sydney University of California Santa Barbara University of California Davis University of California Berkeley National University of Singapore 9. INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON GRID COMPUTING International Symposium on Grid Computing (ISGC) 2005 will be held in conjunction with Service Challenge Meeting on 25- 29 April, 2005 at Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan. The Symposium is designed to provide a forum for scientists, potential developers, as well as users in Asia Pacific to meet and to learn from each other. By exchanging their experiences on how to develop Grid technology and application, this Symposium would provide the Grid community with invaluable insights for future collaboration. The main focus of 2005 program is to introduce the operation of world wide Grid projects and interoperation among those projects. It covers a local tutorial and a variety of presentations ranging from applications on HEP, Bio/Medical, Earth Sciences, Data Grid to the Grid infrastructure, operation, management and services. In addition, a Service Challenge Meeting is also scheduled. For the technical program and registration information, send e-mail to >. 10.
