The 6th APRU Distance Learning and the Internet (DLI) Conference will be held at Far Eastern National University (FENU), Vladivostok, Russia, from 4-7 October 2005. ==>SUBMIT YOUR REGISTRATION FORM BY 15 AUGUST 2005. NOTE: Though the DLI2005 registration deadline is 10 September 2005, most international participants will need a Russian entry visa. To get it without expensive emergency procedures and applying for tourist visas, you have to SUBMIT YOUR REGISTRATION FORM BY 15 AUGUST. The Russian Ministry of International Affairs requires 30 days for approving the official invitations, and FENU needs a few days more to deliver the invitations to the conference participants by express mail. Only after this, the conference participants can apply for their visas to Russian Embassies and Consulates. For this reason, we advise you to register as soon as possible. For those who will be late with their registrations after 15 August, there is still a possibility to apply for a tourist visa in shorter terms, but an official invitation saves time and money. The sixth in its series, the conference aims to bring together leading, international distance learning experts from academia, business and public sectors. The theme for this year is "Linking People through Information Technology Education". The sub-themes for the Conference are namely: 1. Content development in distance and blended learning 2. Infrastructure, technology trends and challenges 3. Cultural exchanges through distance learning 4. Student issues in distance learning and the Internet Issues addressed at the Conference will include e-learning content and quality assurance, credit transfers, online degree recognition, aspects of infrastructure such as video-conferencing, technology-enabled learning, technology trends and challenges. Special interest topics for this year's conference will include student experiences and presentations in distance learning. ? The Call for Papers has been extended. Please submit 1-2 page abstracts of papers to FENU at . Authors will be notified upon acceptance of their papers and will be asked to submit an extended paper of between 2-10 pages. For more information on the call and submission of papers, please go to . ?The Fifth Annual "Distance Learning and the Internet" Conference was hosted by Tsinghua University, Beijing, China from 11-13 October 2004. APRUNET MEETING The next APRUNet meeting will take place at the ?Distance Learning and the Internet? conference to be held in Vladivostok, Russia. See above for details. NOTE: The new URL for APRUNet activities is: . 3.ELECTRONIC CULTRAUL ATLAS INITIATIVE (ECAI) < http://www.ecai.org/> The submission period for ECAI's autumn Regional Meeting to be held in collaboration with the Pacific Neighborhood Consortium has been extended. The conference will be held at the University of Hawaii Manoa between 1-3 November 2005. In addition the Pacific Rim Digital Librarian Alliance will meet on 31 October 2005. Proposals for presentations or full sessions are invited. Papers on the following topics are especially welcomed: 1) Presentations on e-Publications and e-cultural atlases 2) Papers on Austronesia -reflecting the location of this meeting 3) Infrastructure including Grid Computing, middleware and GLORIAD 4) Cultural atlases in teaching Please submit your proposals to Kim Carl at . ASEAN VIRTUAL INSTITUTE FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (AVIST The ASEAN Virtual Institute of Science and Technology (AVIST) has been proposed and endorsed by the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Infrastructure and Resource Development (SCIRD) and the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology (COST) to answer to ASEAN Countries need for Science and Technology (S&T) human resource development (HRD). AVIST is a Virtual Learning network for continuing professional development and advanced studies in science and technology with opportunities for real practical experience at participating universities. AVIST is now offering three courses online they are: - Introduction to Technology & Innovation Management - Sustainable Ecotourism Development and - HyperCourse on Bioinformatics For more information, please visit >. 5. APRU FELLOWS PROGRAM As announced in January, the 6th APRU Fellows Program will be co-hosted by the University of British Columbia (UBC) and University of Malaya (UM) from 14-27 August 2005. Based broadly on the theme of "New Directions in Asian Studies: Ethnicity and Nationalism Before and After the Digital Age", this intensive two-week program will comprise an interesting line-up of activities to engage inquiring minds and to establish long-term collaboration between faculty members from APRU member universities. This year's program will include interactions and presentations by researchers in Asian culture, historians and immigration experts. There will also be visits and field trips to places of rich heritage involving stimulating discussions. The first week of the program (14-20 August) will be hosted by UBC and the second week (21-27 August) by UM. The Fellows Program provides a unique opportunity for fellows to extend their intellectual capacities in a multidisciplinary environment and to connect with outstanding junior faculty members who are their counterparts from top research universities around the Pacific Rim. 6. APRU RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM "Earthquakes Hazards around the Pacific Rim - Prediction and Disaster Prevention" The symposium will be held jointly with the Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU) and hosted by Kyoto University from 31 August to 2 September 2005. Please find the attached preliminary program of the research symposium. Student participation in this symposium is encouraged and awards are available for student posters. There will be optional activities on the third day. Examples of such optional activities are: workshop on tsunami and earthquakes, student session, a walk along the Hanaore earthquake fault, and sightseeing of Kyoto city.
