ACACIA PRESSURES ACADEMIA FOR PATENT PAYMENTS Acacia Media Technologies, which last month suffered a setback in its efforts to force adult entertainment sites to make licensing payments for using its patented streaming video technology, has now turned its attention to higher education, whipping off dozens of letters to colleges claiming the schools' use of streaming video for purposes such as distance learning violates its patents. Acacia's digital media patents were acquired from Greenwich Information Technologies in 2001 and since then Acacia has secured dozens of licensing deals with companies, including Walt Disney. And while a handful of colleges and universities have agreed to pay up, most have resisted. The American Council on Education and the Electronic Frontier Foundation both are advising colleges not to pay, citing last month's legal ruling that several terms in Acacia's patents were indefinite -- a verdict that could knock a hole in Acacia's case for demanding payments from other sectors. "Honestly, I think it's a sign of desperation," says EFF staff attorney Jason Schultz. "Acacia knows the hammer is coming down on its patents, and it's going to extract as much as it can before the apocalypse," adding that the company's tactics were "a threat to the future of education? I think that's despicable. Universities are under enough pressure in their budgets right now to try to pay for everything. The last thing they need to do is give a pound of flesh to some tech company that doesn't even make a product." (AP 9 Aug 2004) 4. FIFTH APRU DOCTORAL STUDENTS CONFERENCE The 5th APRU Doctoral Students Conference was hosted by University of Sydney from 09-13 August 2004. The theme for this year's conference was entitled "Research at Pacific Rim Universities: Economic, Scientific and Cultural Perspectives -- The Way Forward." Designed as an interdisciplinary gathering, the conference offered an excellent opportunity for doctoral students to present their research and exchange ideas with fellow students from APRU universities in the various fields in science, technology, business, economics, social sciences and the humanities. A new feature of this year's conference was a series of conference workshop sessions conducted by faculty members of APRU universities. The workshops organized along the theme of "Preparing Future Faculty Members for Academic Leadership in the 21 Century" seeked to inform doctoral students on what they need to know to enter the professorate at universities. APRU member universities are encouraged to continue to select and fund the travel of at least one doctoral student to these conferences. Participation by two or more doctoral students is most welcome. 5. APRUNET PROJECTS AND PARTNERSHIPS Send offers or requests for partnerships to Here are three APRUNet projects that are moving forward. If you are interested in participating, please contact > or subscribe directly to the mailing lists as detailed below. - Marine and Ocean Biology Project mail to: This area was initiated at the APRUNet meeting in Busan, Korea in August. This is a major area in the Pacific Rim community, and collaboration and advanced technologies may allow and encourage the exploration and comparison of different marine and coastal ecosystems that would otherwise not be available. There are a number of topics that could be examined in this project. Internet2 has a number of undersea projects in its K20 initiatives <%3chttp:/k20.internet2.edu/%3e>. Some are and . Please subscribe to the mailing list (above) if your university would like to join, or if you would like more information. - Global Infectious Diseases Training Program Project mail to: The APRUNet project on Global Infectious Diseases is beginning to coalesce around online education and training in tuberculosis and SARS. A current proposal is to work on simulations with Pacific Rim partners. Please subscribe to the mailing list (above) if your university would like to join, or if you would like more information. - East Asian Studies Videoconferencing Project mail to: This series of multipoint video-conferences on East Asian Studies aims to reconstruct East Asian histories in perspectives growing from within its lived memories and experiences. The most current series was focusing on "Urban Youth Cultures in Asia Pacific". A set of multipoint videoconferences with Seoul National University, University of Tokyo, National University of Singapore, and University of Southern California will continue to be held in the coming semesters. Probably topics include Chinese Nationalism and Globalization: Urban Youth Cultures in East Asia. Please subscribe to the mailing list (above) if your university would like to join, or if you would like more information. 6. NEWS FROM APNIC APNIC Training team recently had a collaborative joint training session with the University of Malaya in KL, Malaysia. I thought the following short report would be newsworthy material for APRUNET Newsletter. APNIC Training team was invited by University of Malaya in KL, Malaysia to conduct a session of Internet Resource Management Essentials training on the 20th July, 2004 to a group of students mainly from the University's Master graduate programme. The Dean of the Computer Science and Information Technology Faculty Professor Dr. Ir. Selvanathan Narainasamy and the Senior Lecturer Mr. Ling Tech Chaw were very glad that APNIC Internet Resource Management Essentials course was able to provide that enrichment to all the Master graduate students in IT who are either already starting work or are on the verge of getting into the work force. The training most certainly helped to put a lot of theory into perspective in real life especially in the world of business and IT. Professor Dr. Selvanathan and Mr. Ling are looking forward to a continuing collaborative effort next year and they were talking about possibly expanding the programme to a technical workshop session. 8. INTERNET2 COMMONS (VIDEOCONFERENCING) WORKSHOP Here's an update on our next training opportunity. Please join us or pass this on to your colleagues. If you're new to H.323 videoconferencing technology or want to broaden your knowledge base, join us for this day-long, intensive workshop in Austin, Texas. You'll also meet others who are deploying and advancing H.323 technologies at member institutions. The training will be held in conjunction with the Fall 2004 Internet2 Member Meeting on September 27th, though attendance and registration are independent of one another. The cost is $200. Topics include H.323 basics, Multipoint Control Units, Session Initiation Protocol, Network Troubleshooting, and more. Successful completion will certify each participant as an Internet2 Commons Site Coordinator, a requirement for participating in the Internet2 Commons H.323 service.
