3. APRUNET DISTANCE LEARNING PARTNERSHIP PROJECT
http://apru.nus.edu.sg/activities/dli/pdf/2004nov_DLPP_meeting.pdf
At the last APRUNet meeting held in Beijing in October 2004, we decided
to restart our Distance Learning Partnership Project (DLPP) that was
delayed twice due to SARS. This project is centered around collaborative
international teams of high school students working with expert faculty
members at APRU institutions on project of real global concern. The
students will also participate in a culminating workshop or conference,
perhaps in conjunction with an APRU research conference on the same
topic. Videoconferencing will be used, along with email, online chat,
etc. We have decided to concentrate on marine and ocean biology as the
content area(s).
We have already begun to hold monthly planning tele- and
videoconferences. The current members are Autonomous University of
Mexico, Far Eastern National University (Vladivostock, Russia),
University of California at San Diego, University of Southern
California. The results of the first planning teleconference are posted
at: http://apru.nus.edu.sg/activities/dli/pdf/2004nov_DLPP_meeting.pdf

Stanford University's Department of Mechanical Engineering announced
that it is offering the degree of Master of Science in mechanical
engineering to technology professionals completely at a distance
beginning in Autumn 2005. All online courses will be taught by Stanford
faculty and delivered worldwide by the Stanford Center for Professional
Development (SCPD).
Successful degree applicants may pursue a master's degree entirely at a
distance in four areas of concentration: Automatic Controls, Design for
Manufacturability, Design Methodology, and Solid Mechanics. Controls
courses and solid mechanics provide theoretical and practical knowledge
applicable to both traditional and emerging fields and technologies.
Industry professionals seeking admission to the online program in Autumn
2005 must apply by January 18, 2005 for consideration.
